It was felt that establishment of a Campus of the IMU at Cochin will go a long way in promotion of the maritime sector in particular and the economy of the country as a whole, and the coastal region in particular. The LNG Petronet Project and the Container Terminal Project at Vallarpadam would also be immensely benefited in terms of manpower training from the IMU Cochin Campus.
To begin with, IMU Centre at Cochin was opened with the ‘in principle’ approval of the Planning Board and the Executive Council of the IMU with the objective of developing the Centre later on as a full-fledged Campus. The Cochin Port Trust has offered its Training Centre Complex at a concessional rate for operating the IMU Centre at Cochin. Other facilities like workshop, fire station, Cochin Port Trust Hospital, etc., have been made available by the Cochin Port Trust for training purposes free of cost to the IMU.
Establishment of the Cochin Campus
For the establishment of the Cochin Campus of the University, the Cochin Port Trust has allotted 10 acres of land at concessional rate to the University. The identified land lies on the Highway on the Willingdon Island and is surrounded by the Cochin Port Trust, the Southern Naval Command and the Cochin Shipyard. At the outset, Diploma in Nautical Science (leading to the award of B.Sc. degree in Nautical Science) was offered at the IMU Cochin Centre with an intake of 40 candidates for the August-2009 batch and with an additional intake of 40 candidates for the February 2010 batch.
